"We're fixin' to lose Lehi!"

                                                                                                            19 August 2013

Hey family :)

This past week has by far the fastest week of the mission. It went by so fast! Just about 5 minutes ago I got to see the one and only Sister Kara Allred for the first time out in the mission!!!! Oh my goodness it is so exciting to see her here! It's so weird but so awesome. She is in my zone. Apparently she was almost a part of my district but they got switched out last second... :( bummer. Oh well it's awesome to see her. She is going to be taking us to Zone Conference this week because we are without a car this week. so fun! )

This week we made even more progress with John. We were talking about his Book of Mormon reading and he began explaining what he had read at the beginning of 2 Nephi and he said "We are fixin' to lose Lehi here soon!!” hahaha! Oh my goodness. Sister Hoyt and I just busted up laughing. It hit our funny bones pretty hard. I love those moments of hard laughter. It's such a good stress reliever and feels so good. haha! We also took him on a tour of the church this week. He has back problems and sometimes he falls over when he walks so he has been nervous to come to church. Taking him to the church, having him sit in the benches and see what he would be doing really helped him and he seemed a lot more confident! The problem that we have with him right now is he is working on chewing tobacco. He just bought about $50 of chew before we taught him the Word of Wisdom... not good... but we are working on that with him! We have a baptismal date goal of September 7th. Hopefully it works out!!!

The other night I made a wrong turn and so we decided to drop by Yirette's place (the girl that we have had a hard time seeing for a couple weeks.) We dropped by and finally she was there!!! We were able to set up a time with her and were able to show her the movie “Finding Faith in Christ.” It went really well and the spirit was so strong. It's crazy how church movies and stuff like that are even more powerful when you are out on the mission.

Sister Hoyt has been having a hard time with sleepwalking and stuff again... which doesn't help my sleeping all that much. I feel bad for her and I wish I could do more for her! She is getting help to try and help her sleep better. We have been closing our bedroom door at night and the other morning we woke up to the bedroom door open and the kitchen sink running...! kinda scary haha!  Keep her in your prayers!

We have District Prep Day today and we are going to a glow in the dark mini golf place. Should be fun! My email time got cut short because of it... sorry :( but I'll try and send more in a letter if I have time after mini golf. Thanks for all you do and for all your support.

Stay close to the Lord and always look for His hand in your life. He is with you every day!!! I'm so excited to hear about work and school starting up at home. Keep me updated on how things go and tell all my friends coming home from missions that I love them and give them a big hug for me :) I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Talk to you next week =D

Love,

Sister Katie Kirkham

P.S. Sister Hoyt's MTC teacher was Payton Holt and we just connected that today. How funny is that?! Tell Payton congrats on his engagement! love you :)

Hey family :)                                                                                         12 August 2013

This past week was SO HOT. August here in Florida is burning and so humid. Of course we had the bikes last week as well! But all is well. I really do like riding my bike. You feel like you get so much more accomplished in a day because you talk to so many more people than you do when you are in a car. Sister Hoyt and I worked super, super hard this week and have come up with four new investigators from it! We don't know how promising they really are yet but I will keep you updated on them. We biked a ton. We biked at least 10 miles every day. It was pretty nuts but I lost quite a bit of weight from it…hahaha! I don't have to worry so much about what the members are feeding me during bike week ;) Riding a bike in this Florida heat as a sister missionary is kind’ve funny... we have AWESOME tan lines. My feet are half pasty white and half black, my watch tan line is very noticeable and I have an awesome farmers tan line. You sweat sooo fast out here because of the heat and humidity that you immediately have helmet hair and your legs and feet are filthy after a day of riding around (especially during the wet days in Florida!).. so you pretty much give up on your appearance by the end of the day and just go with it. hahaha It's so hot here that you are always praying for the rain. It feels so good! It's just awkward when you have an appointment and you are soaked...

Although this past week was physically exhausting, it was a good week :) I feel like Sister Hoyt and I are starting to get the system down of how to do this work with two of us as well as just being new missionaries! The first week together was super stressful but I feel like we have a better handle on things now :)

This past week we showed Yazay the 'Restoration' video. She told us after the video that she had prayed that morning to have a sign that the Book of Mormon was true and she felt like God had answered her prayers with the video. Pretty cool. The spirit was really strong in that lesson and I bore a simple testimony of the power of the spirit and the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon and Restoration…yes, I got teary. I bore my testimony of the importance of striving to continually have those spiritual confirmations that this church is true so that her faith is always growing and being renewed. At the end of the lesson she casually brought up that she forgot to tell us her mom said she could get baptized! what?! Hahaha! It's so awesome to know that Yazay wants to get baptized and her mom is willing to let her be.. but I'm just nervous about baptizing a 12 year old that doesn't have a whole lot of support from home and doesn't have friends around her that are of the church. She is a strong willed girl but it still makes me uneasy. She could so easily slip away. Plus, we are wanting to make sure that she truly is getting baptized for the right reasons, which is because she believes this is the only true church. We don't want her to get baptized because she just thinks it is a "cool" church or that it is something "new" or whatever... so please keep both Yazay and us in your prayers that we will know what is best for her.

We taught John the Gospel of Jesus Christ this week and he accepted a baptismal date! Several weeks ago when we first brought of proper authority and baptism he got very offended that his baptism when he was younger "did not count" and he stormed out of the lesson… it was the most awkward lesson. There was a lot of other things that built up to him being upset (a member that was with us was texting and arguing during the lesson). It has been a huge miracle and blessing to see John and his less active wife, Debbie, become so excited about the Book of Mormon and our message. Debbie even said that she was sorry for all the time that she has wasted. It was awesome! John was so excited to tell us about what he had been reading since we last saw him and was telling us detail after detail. It's so exciting to see the Holy Ghost working through him. I can't remember if I told you this already, but when he was telling us about how excited he was about the Book of Mormon he exclaimed, "I believe this is true!" and as he said it you could see the surprise that was written across his face as he realized what he had just said. Hahaha, so awesome! It's so important to realize that it is the Holy Ghost that is the teacher, not us. He has sat in on so many lessons when misisonaries would go over to teach his wife, but he never really grew a testimony or interest in it until he began to read the Book of Mormon and pray about it for himself.

While we were out contacting, we ran into a 20 year kid named Dennis that was a former investigator! He was supposed to get baptized back in January but would not agree to living the law of Chastity... so the baptism fell through. We have had two lessons with him now and he says that he feels more ready and willing to live all the commandments now because he sees what he is missing out on and misses the feelings he had when he was with lessons with past elders. So we talked to him about the Law of Chastity (my first time doing so... woot woot!) and it really wasn't that bad haha! He told us that we brought up a lot of really good points with why it is good to live it and that he sees it in a totally new light having sisters teach it. haha He is praying about it this week and we are going to talk to him more about it next time we see him. So there is another promising baptism.

I was so grateful for Sister Couch this past week taking Sister Hoyt and I to go get our toenails done. haha! She could tell that we really needed to take a break and it was the best way! Although my toes never see the sun anymore.. it's fun to have cute toes to look at night ;)

I gave a spiritual thought on Patience and Faith in Christ at our District Meeting. I will just send my notes home to you so you get the full thing but it was really good timing to study those topics. I used the story of Amulon not letting the people of Alma pray and how they had to use patience and have faith in God. It's found in Mosiah 24: 10-16. I pointed out that although there was opposition, they continued to be obedient to the Lord's commandments by praying in their hearts, trusting God's will and having patience in His timing and the Lord was able to make their burdens lighter and give them the strength to endure those trials. As missionaries, we need to remember that no one wants all His children back to live with them more than Christ and Heavenly Father do and so we need to be patient and trust that they know what is best for the people of Winter Garden. As long as we are being obedient to the missionary rules and work hard, having faith in Christ, His work will move forward. There is a section in Preach My Gospel under 'Faith in Jesus Christ' that I really like. It says that when we have faith,"He will help change the desires of our hearts." I love that. When we turn our hearts to Him, we will have more righteous desires to become better.

We dropped by a "eternigator" (eternal investigator) to see why they weren't at church and he had pretty much been antied. We asked if he had read and prayed about the Book of Mormon and came to find out that he has not been praying with "real intent" like it says in Moroni 10. I asked if he had ever felt the Holy Ghost and he then told us of this experience he had where he had been taken over by the Holy Ghost and God told him that men were not supposed to be in space. It's different. I'll have to mail home this print out of his conversation he had with God. Not really sure what to think of all that!

Elder Weston, the elder from the Allison's ward, called me and told me that a former investigator he had taught while in Winter Garden had been on his mind a lot lately. So we went and saw him! He seems like a pretty cool guy. He is a storm chaser and has a lot of crazy stories. Anyways, I'll keep you posted on what happens there.

Reality that I am a Mormon, Utah girl has hit me hard this past week haha! I have learned out here that my stomach is very, very sensitive to gross, strong smells.... every time we go into a home that smells SUPER strong of animals or smoke.. I get a nasty stomach ache and dizzy head. hahaha It's kinda embarrassing and it goes away after riding my bike for a little bit but man... it is so nice to breathe fresh air again after some lessons.. it's pretty crazy.

I'm trying to think of what else happened this past week... I feel like this week went by so fast yet so much has happened that it's hard to keep the weeks straight.... oh! I saw my first ever armadillo and possum up close on a bike!!! ... but they were both road kill... so cute. hahaha They are weird creatures. I think I'm okay that Utah doesn't have any of those. haha!

How are things going with work in the ASB Angie? I'm soooo excited that you got the job!! You will love it there I'm sure :) Have you been up to see anyone at the Admissions Office while you are there? If so, give them all a big hug for me, k? :)

Well, know how much I love you guys and am SO grateful for you. Some days I feel like I'm going to be home in no time and other days not so much ;) but I know that this time I have out here is blessing both of us so much and I thank my Heavenly Father for it every night. Thank you for your support, your letters and for always setting such a good example for me. You are all awesome and I love you so, so much!!! Until next week!!!! I LOVE YOU!!!!

Love,

Sister Kirkham

                                                                                                August 5, 2013

Hey Fam :)

This past week has been really long. haha It feels like Sister Hoyt and I dropped Sister Conant off at transfers forever ago... but it hasn't even been a full week yet! It's been interesting for Sister Hoyt and I to try and train each other and try and figure everything out on our own but we are hanging in there!

We have spent a ton of time knocking doors this past week and didn't get any appointments from it... it was quite discouraging... and then the next day at church we were depending on a member to pick up Yazay (the 12 year old who wants to get baptized) but the member got called in for work and didn't let anyone know... so Yazay couldn't get to church... THEN after church yesterday, we went over to Yirrette's home for a lesson with Sister Couch to find out that she wasn't even home for her appointment. It was slightly embarrassing but both Sister Hoyt and I both began to cry as we drove away from Yirrette's because we both were so frustrated. Sister Couch pulled over and had a good talk with her about how we had been working really hard and hadn't seen the fruits of our work, Sister Hoyt sleep walks and so we both don't sleep well at night making us tired and were just frustrated that we don't really know what we are doing! haha! It's hard being so new and not knowing if things aren't going right because we are doing something wrong or because it is just a trial of our faith. Anyway, Sister Couch was sooo sweet. She has a list of less actives and other people in the Relief Society that are struggling since she is the Relief Society President and she helped brain storm who we could go see. After we are done emailing at the library today she is actually taking us out to lunch and to get our toenails done, then go get some ice cream or something haha! It will be nice to feel slightly normal again... although I'll have to wear a skirt while I get my nails done ;) not too bad though! It's just a very different life as a missionary. It has been soooo rewarding and I really have enjoyed the hard work most of the time but it's going to be so nice to just take a small break haha!

Last night we taught a lesson to the former bishop's family. The bishop's wife drove us home and thanked us for the lesson because she had been worried about her daughter and it seemed to touch her. That was encouraging! Plus, we were out looking for potentials and former investigators later and we ran into a lady that we had met several weeks before. About 3 weeks ago we had had the prompting to go knock on a street that had only 3-4 DESERTED homes on it... what?! We were laughing at each other for going down that street but as we got to the end of the street we met this lady named Crucita. She was walking to a doctor's appointment and we walked and talked with her, sharing a short message with her. We ran into the same lady last night and she told us that she wants us to teach her teenage grandkids that live with her! Miracle! so small but so big! God really does work in mysterious ways.

Last Friday, it was POURING rain harder than I ever remember seeing rain come down. Thankfully, Sister Hoyt and I had just barely gone home for the night as it began to rain. We both watched the rain from our patio, looked at each other..., smiled, and then ran out into the rain! Hahaha! We were splashing each other, jumping around getting each other wet... although we were SOAKED within SECONDS of being in the rain! …Then we both began to play leap frog in our soaking skirts... hahahaha it must have been a hilarious sight to see... but I don't think anyone would have been able to see us. We were jumping in the largest puddles out in the parking lot. So funny! So fun! Such a good relief from the hard work of the day.

Although this week has been hard, the lessons that we have taught have been super powerful and the spirit has been so strong. I think I told you a little about Mike last week... but he was telling us about how he has had a lot of near death experiences such as being shot only a foot away but none of the bullets hit him and a lot of other crazy stories. He admitted that deep down he has always felt like there was a reason why he was still here and he is wanting to find out why. He has a real desire to learn and I'm excited to start teaching him.

We have had several lessons with Yazay this week. I love teaching her because she is so open to learning and soaks in everything we say... but it does worry me that she will be doing this all on her own as a 12 year old. Her parents have still not given her permission to be baptized but they are allowing her to still take lessons from us. It's a weird situation and quite confusing. So keep her in your prayers! Yazay is such a strong willed little girl. She has set such a great example in standing up for what she believes in. She is so young! She is Rilee's age!!  She can recognize the spirit so easily--it's amazing. I told her that we all have special gifts from God and that she truly has a gift of recognizing the Spirit and following its guidance. I promised her that if she continues to follow the spirit that blessings will open for her and she will be able to be baptized.

John Ferris is doing well also! We had not been able to teach him a lesson since he got really offended about proper authority and that his baptism as a kid did not work.... but we taught him the Plan this past week and the spirit was SUPER strong. He understood everything really well and kept saying, "This makes so much sense," or other comments showing that the Spirit was teaching him so much. It was awesome to see him feel the spirit and understand. We also taught him a little about the temple and that he could be sealed to his family forever. He was very, very excited and interested about that and said, "So... I can do that also if I get baptized?" So cool! His wife, Debbie, who joined us,  hasn't been to church in 7 years until this past month. She is doing really well also. She made a comment at the end of the lesson that she wishes she, "Hadn't wasted so much time". Yay!! The next lesson we had with John we talked to him more about the importance of the Book of Mormon and read a chapter with him. He got SUPER excited when he understood more of the background of the Book of Mormon and the stories in it. He has been more diligent in keeping his commitment to read and his whole attitude has changed.

A really weird thing happened.... we stopped by a home of a blind lady's home who we had met the week before... we knocked on the door and a larger man opened the door that didn't have a shirt on and told us that his mom, (the blind women,) was asleep. As he was talking with us, all of a sudden his face went really relaxed, he dropped to the ground limp, and the door slammed shut!!! Sister Hoyt and I both thought we just saw someone die... It scared us sooo bad! I opened up the door to see if he was okay and he was sitting dazed on the floor really embarrassed and shocked that he had just passed out. We asked if we could help him and he said he was okay and just sat on the ground dazed... after many attempts to ask if we could help him up or anything we left in shock. Craziest thing ever! It scared me SO bad! Their home is pretty much just rickety old boards as well, so when he fell the whole home shook. Frightening!

The same day as transfers, Sister Hoyt had to go to the doctors to get her blood drawn for some testing due to her sleep walking. When we were waiting in the doctor’s office we noticed a very young couple waiting there as well. The man was having a really hard time with something and the lady was trying to comfort him. We went over, told them that we didn't want to intrude but wondered if they would like us to say a prayer with them. As we were asking and through the prayer, this guy had tears just streaming down his face because he had a huge phobia of needles :( poor guy. They seemed very touched by it and they both were interested in learning more about our beliefs. Since we weren't in our area, we sent their info onto other missionaries but it was great! One of the new senior missionaries, Sister Nielson was with us at the doctor’s office and saw that.  A couple nights after, she called us and told us that she had been inspired to be more bold with people because of our example and she was able to share a short message with someone in Walmart.

I have a lot of hope for this next week and that it will be better. There were a lot of good things that have happened but it was also a physically and emotionally tough week as well. I feel a lot more positive this morning though and there are a lot more people that we will hopefully be able to teach this week! Sister Hoyt and I have realized that we don't have as many investigators as we used to because we prayerfully dropped quite a few of them before Sister Conant left. It was hard to do but we realized that we weren't using the Lord's time the best we could by continuing to try and teach them when they weren't progressing. That's the hard part about missionary work.

Thank you so much for the shoes and letters! I LOVE that picture that you sent of mom and I at the MTC! So cute :) :) I also began to cry when I read that Angela has found a job at BYU thanks to Trav ... Wow! I love my Admissions family!! I feel so blessed knowing that Heavenly Father is watching over my family while I'm gone :) So is Angie moved down to Provo or what is going on there? That is sooo crazy! Such an exciting time ahead for all of us :)

Thank you so much for continuing to send me letters, for your encouraging words and testimonies. I love you all soooo much. It feels like it has been forever and a half since I have seen you and that it will be forever and a half until I see you again... but… at the same time I feel like time is flying by! Haha! Thank you for your love and examples! Say your prayers, keep reading and be good!!! I LOVE YOU!!!!

Love,

Sister Kirkham
